SHIMOGA: Jawaharlal Nehru National College of Engineering (JNNCE) Principal A.V. Subramanyam said here on Tuesday that Physics can be taught in a more interesting manner with the application of modern tools such as multimedia which had been made possible with the advent of information and communication technologies such as Internet and web learning. Mr. Subramanyam was inaugurating the two-day University Grants Commission (UGC) State-level workshop on "Use of Information Communication Technologies (ICT) of Physics teaching" organised by the DVS Arts and Science College in association with the Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO). He said the application of the multimedia in the teaching of Physics can make it more easily understandable for students. "But multimedia cannot be a replacement for the classroom teaching of Physics with the blackboard and chalk continuing to be the indispensable tools," he said. He said: "It is true that the teaching of Physics has to keep pace with the level of learning of students" and added that the emergence of e-learning had brought about revolutionary changes in the method of teaching making the presentation of subjects more interesting through the transfer of information through internet or website from any part of the world. Prof. Subramanyam said with the introduction of the EDUSAT by the Visvesvaraya Technological University (VTU) it had been possible for engineering colleges with poor teaching faculty to have direct access to the latest information on various subjects. He said Physics was a fascinating subject for him and had even decided to make teaching career in that subject but because of certain compulsions he had to end up as a teacher in an engineering college. DVS Managing Committee Secretary R.S. Ashwathnaryana presided over the function. Earlier, DVS Arts and Science College Principal C.S. Nanjundaiah welcomed the gathering. K.V. Padmanabh proposed a vote of thanks. Later, Prof. Subramanyam inaugurated the "India in Space" exhibition at the DVS Ranga Mandir organised in association with the ISRO.
