Four children drowned

KURNOOL: Four children were drowned in a pond at Maddikera in Kurnool district on Tuesday. According to reports, the children - Kistappa, 10, Timmappa, 8, V. Papanna, 8, and V. Ravi, 7, went to Maddammakunta around 4 p.m. for swimming and drowned. - Staff Reporter

Tata Indicom set to expand base

Four die in road accident

NALGONDA: Four members of a family were killed and two others suffered injuries when the car in which they were travelling hit a RTC bus at Gudur in Bibinagar mandal on Tuesday.

The police said that Mentula Narendranath, 40, a radiologist, and his family members - Lalitha, 35, wife, Venkatesh, 7, son, and Chinni, 2, daughter - were on their way to Bhongir from Hyderabad along with his sister's daughter Mounika, 14, and son Venkataramana, 10. Narendranath's family died on the spot. - Staff Reporter

Inquiry into teachers' transfer ends

ANANTAPUR: Inquiry into the alleged irregularities in the recently held counselling for teachers' transfer in the district concluded here on Tuesday.

Regional Joint Director of School Education, Hyderabad, Ch. Pullaiah, probed the charge against DEO P. Ananda Murthy and other staff that modification was made in the transfer of over 59 teachers after completion of counselling exercise. He concluded that some 15 of them were irregular. He was learnt to have opined that it was not a "cognisable offence." - Staff Reporter

Naxals target two tractors

KARIMNAGAR: Maoists blasted a tractor and torched another belonging to a private contractor, who is executing a bridge work, at Molugupalli of Mahamutharam mandal in the wee hours of Tuesday. Police sources said some 12 armed naxalites of the Mahadevpur dalam went to the project site and woke up labourers and the work supervisor. They threatened them with dire consequences and targeted the tractors.In a note left at the site the naxalites asked the contractor to stop work or face the consequences. - Staff Reporter

10 persons held; ID liquor seized

WARANGAL: In a pre-dawn swoop, Excise & Prohibition personnel laid trap on important routes and arrested 10 persons allegedly transporting ID liquor on Tuesday.

According to Sub-Inspector A. Mohan Babu, the personnel laid trap at Vallampatla village in Cheriyal mandal and seized 550 litres of ID liquor and destroyed it. They also seized five two-wheelers used for transporting the liquor. - Staff Reporter

Weaver dies of hunger?

Nellore: Ch. Venkatasubbaiah, 58, a weaver of Sangam mandal, died reportedly due to hunger on Monday. Subbaiah was without proper work and had been feeling lonely since the death of his wife three years ago. It may be recalled that four days ago, another weaver Penchalaiah reportedly died due to penury. - Staff Reporter

Cold wave in State

HYDERABAD: Dry and cold weather has enveloped the State. Minimum temperature fell to 11 degree Celsius, which was recorded by Adilabad on Tuesday.

The night temperatures dropped all over Telangana and at a few places in coastal Andhra and Rayalaseema. - Special Correspondent

Stolen property recovered

TIRUPATI: The police nabbed a person in the town on Tuesday and recovered stolen property worth Rs.6 lakhs from his possession.

S.Sridhar, a resident of Autonagar area, was found to have indulged in as many as 13 house-breakings in the town since June 2004. The cops recovered 750 gm of gold, 2 kg of silver, two DVD players and Rs.75,000 from him. Staff Reporter

Man killed in accident

KADAPA: An Allwyn van cleaner, Siva (32) of Mydukur, died and driver Srinivasa Goud sustained injuries when the vehicle rammed into a stationary lorry near Palannagaripalle bridge in Ramapuram mandal on Tuesday.

The injured driver was admitted to Rayachoti Government hospital. Ramapuram sub-inspector Ramakrishnudu registered a case.

Municipal town planning supervisor Krishnasamudram, `Snehita' Association, Anantapur secretary Radha, Velugu teacher Y.V.Sujatha, its secretary Udaya Mohan and teacher Vasudeva Reddy participated.

Bank staff go on strike

MADANAPALLE: Members of the All India Ing Vysya Bank Employees Union here observed one-day strike on Monday demanding end to "unfair labour practices" and alleged violation of awards and settlements by the management. - Correspondent

Journalists stage dharna

VIZIANAGARAM : Journalists, affiliated to APUWJ, staged a dharna at the Collectorate on Tuesday condemning the reported abusive language used by Srikakulam District Collector A. Koteswara Rao against electronic media journalists recently.

Union State secretary D. Atchuta Rao and district secretary P.S.S.V. Prasad submitted a memorandum to District Revenue Officer U.C.G. Nageswara Rao appealing to the Chief Minister to take action against the Collector. - Correspondent
