HAVERI: Like in the other two districts that were part of the erstwhile undivided Dharwad district, in Haveri district too, the Congress seems to be marching ahead of its opponents in the zilla and taluk panchayat elections. The Haveri Zilla Panchayat has 32 members and the total number of members in the seven taluk panchayats in the district is 118. The counting of votes continued till late in the night and the results of 50 per cent of the total number seats were available by 9 p.m. Among the 18 zilla panchayat constituencies, the results of which were declared, the Congress has won in nine constituencies closely followed by the Bharatiya Janata Part that secured eight and Janata Dal (Secular) one. The officials of the election wing revealed that at 9 p.m., the results of 83 taluk panchayat constituencies had been declared. Congress had won in 54 constituencies followed by BJP (19), Janata Dal (S) 6, All-India Progressive Janata Dal (4), Samajwadi Party (2) and independents (5).
