Special Correspondent
MANGALORE: Ivan D'Souza of the Congress, a former director of the board of Central Arecanut Marketing and Processing Co-operative Limited (CAMPCO), has said that the December 24 elections to the board were undemocratic and unilateral, and the Union Department of Cooperation should declare it null and void.
Congress's decision
Mr. D'Souza has said the Congress decided not to contest the elections as they did not conform to democratic norms or to the cooperative spirit. The directors from the Congress and leader of arecanut growers wanted the general body to be under the control of CAMPCO. The newly elected body represented only 3,000 growers, and thousands of growers did not participate in the elections, according to him. He has alleged that Sahakara Bharati, which has stated that it has won a majority on the CAMPCO board, kept nearly 77,000 voters out of the election process.
