Capital yet to get a good concert hall, laments the maestro

NEW DELHI: After enthralling music lovers in Chennai on Monday, maestro Zubin Mehta arrived here with his Bavarian State Orchestra on Tuesday but revealed that it would be with some trepidation that he would wield the baton before the audience at Indira Gandhi Indoor Stadium on Wednesday.

"We will be rehearsing at the stadium prior to the performance not for the music but to get accustomed to the technical part," said Mr. Mehta, adding that a stadium was not acoustically designed to host an orchestra.

Recounting his past experience with Delhi, the maestro told media persons at a press conference in Hotel Taj Palace here in the evening that he had performed at the same stadium almost ten years ago and lamented that the Capital was yet to get a good concert hall.

He, however, expressed satisfaction that with a full stadium his music would reach a wider audience. The last time round the orchestra was given only half the space.

Mr. Mehta also had a word of praise for private companies for making the tour possible.

More such companies should come together for the cause of music, he said, quipping, "Though I am sure it would purely be a loss from their standpoint!"

After completing his stint with the Bavarian State Orchestra next July, Mr. Mehta plans to join the Florence Orchestra.

In reply to a query, the maestro said he was happy to be back in his country and was ready to return as often as people here wanted him to.

During the day the entourage took time off for a quiet visit to the Taj Mahal in Agra.

"It was for the first time that the entire orchestra was there at the Taj," revealed Mr. Mehta.
