Pawar mourns Packer's death

New Delhi: The Board of Control for Cricket in India president, Sharad Pawar, on Wednesday expressed shock at the sudden death of Australian media mogul Kerry Packer who died in Sydney on Tuesday.

``Packer was a visionary who transformed the way the game was played worldwide,'' Mr. Pawar said in a statement here.

``An influential media magnate and philanthropist, Packer was a fierce competitor who was known to be controversial sometimes but always generous.

Cricket lovers in India acknowledge and will remember him for his passion for the game.

The results of his painstaking effort to popularise the game are there for all of us to see,'' said Mr. Pawar.

In Bridgetown, West Indies cricketers also mourned Mr. Packer's death.

``Kerry was a great motivator. Although he used the stick when it was needed he preferred to use the carrot. He knew how to reach his people,'' read a joint statement from Dr. Rudi Webster, manager of the West Indies team in the 1977-1979 World Series Cricket, and Clive Lloyd, team captain during those years.''— Agencies
