The Institute of Distance Education of the University of Kerala is facing a problem of distances. The institute now located on the Kariavattom campus will shift to a new eight-storey complex on the university's Palayam campus it will share with the Institute of Management in Kerala. So, why does IDE wish to come to Palayam at all? The answer apparently is `too much of a distance'. Over the years many students and teachers have pointed out to IDE that though it deals with `distance' education this need not necessarily mean that the institute should be located at a distance from the city. "Students have trouble coming to Kariavattom, guest faculty have that problem too. Working students in particular are affected badly. If IDE comes to Palayam then everybody will find it easy to get there," a official said. At present, only the foundation stone of the new building has been laid. IDE will have to wait for some more time till it is able to reduce the `distance' between itself and its students.
