ANANTAPUR: Popularity for Wireless in Local Loop (WLL) phone services has been increasing in the district, General Manager of the Anantapur Telecom District of Bharat Sanchar Nigam Limited, Md. Nayeemuddin, has claimed. They already had 6,027 WLL connections under 16 WLL stations and installation of equipment was in progress at another five stations, all mandal headquarters, he told newspersons here on Thursday. They were planning to set up WLL stations at another 10 places, he said.
Wide coverage
On cellular services the BSNL General Manager stated that they already had wide coverage network with 58 functioning towers. Work is under progress at 23 sites and an additional 22 sites were also being planned for setting up cell towers. By March 2007-end they would have more than 120 cell towers. He stated that BSNL was largest network in the district having 98,915 basic phone connections, 73,592 cellular connections and 6,027 WLL connections. Besides, they also had 3,454 STD public call offices, 4,485 coin collection board PCOs and 480 local PCOs. Stating that India Telephone Cards had also become most popular in the district he said they had sold ITCs worth Rs. 99 lakhs this year already. People were taking `sulabh' connections with only incoming call facility on minimal monthly rental and were making use of ITCs for making outgoing calls. On Internet connections, Mr. Nayeemuddin said they had already projected the equipment required for providing broadband connections in all major town in the district. Presently, they had 191 broadband connections and 4,056 sancharnet (prepaid) connections. A category-I Customer Service Centre will be inaugurated here on the New Year day. The Excel prepaid and CellOne postpaid cell connections were being given on demand, he stated.
