ERODE: Over 200 men and women staged a road roko on Wednesday on Chitode-Erode Main Road at Kongampalayam Junction, demanding that tanners here shift their units to SIPCOT Industrial Growth Centre near Perundurai. Traffic was affected on the road for over two hours.
RO plant planned
These villagers belonging to Kongampalayam, Kothukkaranpalayam, Maravapalayam, Thaneerpandalpalayam, Veerapanadiyur, Chottiyampalayam and two other villages squatted on the road. They said that of the 44 tanneries in Erode, 15 were located in Kongampalayam and its surrounding areas. Nine tanners had decided to install a common effluent treatment plant and a reverse osmosis (RO) plant. But the villagers said that the tanners would not install RO plant, and would continue to discharge more effluents into the drains. They demanded the Collector instruct the tanners to shift to Perundurai SIPCOT. Following the road roko, traffic was diverted. Officials rushed to the spot and pacified the crowd. They assured that tanners would be instructed not to discharge untreated waste into the drains, on which the crowd dispersed.
Effluents discharge
Meanwhile, Erode PMK secretary R. Vadivel on Thursday said that a few textile units in SIPCOT were discharging effluents into the drains. He demanded that the Collector instruct the dyers to treat the effluents and install RO plants.
