Pondicherry: The Labour Department will next month launch courses on modern fishing and marine engineering in a bid to improve the skills of fishermen. The two courses, each of one-year duration, `Modern Fishing' and `Mechanic Marine Engines' will be started at Nonankuppam, Health and Labour Minister of Pondicherry E. Valsaraj said. He was inaugurating a five-day training camp for women to augment their behavioural skills management at Oulgaret near here on Thursday. He said that the Franco-Indian Vocational Training Institute here would also start a six-month course on `Bio Medical technician' and a one-year course on `Bio Medical Engineering.' Candidates completing the course are assured of placement by a private company in Malaysia. The Minister, who presented a cheque for Rs 94,000 to a poor family for cardiac surgery for one of its members, said the Health Department had a scheme to sanction money for surgeries and treatment for critical ailments. The grant ranged between Rs 1 lakh and Rs 1.5 lakh.
