Rs.4.6 crore for tourism projects in Tiruvannamalai

Works include introduction of boating facilities

TIRUVANNAMALAI: An allocation of Rs.459.45 lakhs has been made by the Central and Tamil Nadu Governments for the year 2005-06, for undertaking tourism development activities in Tiruvannamalai town, the Girivalam path around the Annamalai Hills and the Sathanur Dam in Tiruvannamalai district.

According to a release from the Collector, Sathyabrata Sahoo, the following tourism development works would be commenced soon with the above funds: beautification and introduction of boating facilities in Thamaraikulam, development of the central bus stand, laying of cement roads and installation of decorative lights in the Mada Streets around the Sri Arunachaleswarar Temple, beautification and formation of parks in the tanks in Tiruvannamalai municipal limits, construction of pilgrims' rest-houses and benches, installation of high mast lights and sodium vapour lamps and establishment of a museum, all on the Girivalam path, construction of check dams and undertaking fire-prevention measures on the hills, and, beautification of the statues and parks, introduction of children's trains, repair of the hanging bridge and upgradation of the links roads, all in Sathanur Dam.

Besides, work on improvement of the basic amenities for tourists is to be undertaken in Tiruvannamalai municipality under the Tourism Development Scheme at a cost of Rs.75.50 lakhs, which comprised a matching contribution of Rs.37.75 lakhs each from the Department of Tourism, Tamil Nadu Government and the Tiruvannamalai Municipality.

The above funds are to be used for the construction of a vehicle park near Easanyam, installation of high mast lights and sodium vapour lamps, and upgrading of the link roads leading to temple.
