The airport is set to witness substantial increase in its aeronautical revenue

NEW DELHI: In a major move to promote the inflow of international tourists, the Union Cabinet on Thursday approved a proposal to declare the domestic airport at Jaipur as an international airport.

Announcing this, Finance Minister and Cabinet spokesperson, P. Chidambaram, said this would help offer improved connectivity and wider choice of services at competitive costs to air travellers.

With this, Jaipur becomes the 14th international airport in the country.

The airport at Sanganer, Jaipur belongs to the Airport Authority of India (AAI). This is one of the 12 modern airports where facilities have been upgraded.

Since February 2002, Indian Airlines (now Indian) has been operating international flights from Jaipur to Dubai and Bangkok.

With the runway length of 9,000 feet and the civil apron capable of accommodatingfour A-320 aircraft at a time, the terminal building can cater to 500 passengers at a time.

And plan is afoot to extend the runway length to 12,000 feet and expand terminal building to accommodate 1,000 passengers per hour, official sources said.

Increase in rates

After getting the international status, Jaipur airport is set to witness substantial increase in its aeronautical revenue because of the increase in rates of landing and parking charges and route navigational facilities charges.

More international and chartered flights are now expected to operate via Jaipur.
