Action taken against speeding tipper lorries

Motor Vehicle Department conducts checks

ALAPPUZHA: In a move to control the overloading and rash driving of tipper lorries, which were leading to accidents, the State Motor Vehicle Department carried out a surprise check in the district on Thursday following the direction of Deputy Transport Commissioner T.S. Jose.

In a vehicle check conduct in the Chengannur-Kodukulanji-Mavelikkara road, a team of officials of the department, led by Joint Regional Transport Officer Abdul Jaleel, motor vehicle inspector Shibu K. Itty and assistant motor vehicle inspector M.G. Manoj took into custody 13 tipper lorries.

Mr. Shibu said all the lorries that were detained carried excess load. Another 14 tipper lorries had been let off after charging cases and collecting fines, he said.

According to Mr. Shibu a fine of Rs.40,000 had been collected from the offenders. He said strict action would be taken against the offenders. Mr. Sibu said the department would recommend cancellation of licenses of the drivers of tipper lorries who drove their vehicles at speeds above the stipulated limit. The permit of those tipper lorries that carried excess load would be cancelled, he said.
