Ponomariov in sole lead

NEW DELHI: P. Hari Krishna drew with Sergei Tiviakov of the Netherlands and slipped to the second spot after joint-overnight leader Ruslan Ponomariov snatched the sole lead with an expected victory over tailender Oscar De La Riva Aguado in the sixth and penultimate round of the Pamplona International chess tournament at Pamplona, in Spain, on Wednesday.

Hari, who plays black against Ponomariov in the final round, has four points while the Ukrainian has 4.5 points. Hari and second seed Tiviakov signed truce in 27 moves of their Nimzo Indian game.

Later, Ponomariov emerged as the day's lone winner by taming Aguado in 52 moves following the classical variation of Sicilian Defence.

The results (sixth round): P. Hari Krishna (Ind, 4) drew with Sergei Tiviakov (Ned, 3.5); Oscar De La Riva Aguado (And, 1) lost to Ruslan Ponomariov (Ukr, 4.5); Laurent Fressinet (Fra, 3) drew with Zviad Izoria (Geo, 3); Ivan Cheparinov (Bul, 3.5) drew with Jan Timman (Ned, 1.5).
