NEW DELHI: Twelve-year-old Parimarjan Negi started his campaign in the Hastings Masters chess tournament by beating Denmark's Claus Noerregaard in the first round at Hastings, United Kingdom, on Wednesday. Negi, who won with black pieces, now plays seventh seeded British Grandmaster Mark Hebden in the next round. However, World under-10 champion Sahaj Grover and his coach Gurpreet Pal Singh failed to open their account on the opening day of this tough 10-round Swiss league event. Grover lost to British WFM Jessie Gilbert and Gurpreet went down to ninth seeded French International Master Jean-Pie Le Roux. Russian GM Vladimir Belov, with a rating of 2620, heads the formidable field.
