21-run win for Rajahs HSS

RAMANATHAPURAM: Rajahs HSS beat K.J. East Muslim HSS, Paramakudi by 21 runs in the Ramanathapuram district inter-school cricket tournament here on Thursday.

The scores: Rajahs HSS 96 in 18.5 overs bt K.J. East Muslim HSS 75 in 15.5 overs.

Nabeesa Ammal MHSS 99 in 19.4 overs lost to AVMSM HSS 100 for four in 14.4 overs.

Hockey tournament

Mathew Hockey Club and the Tirunelveli division of the Sports Development Authority of Tamil Nadu will jointly conduct the Mark Devasahayam Memorial Trophy State-level hockey tournament at Palayamkottai from January 16 to 18. For details contact C.J. Dawson, District Sports Officer, on 9443453395.

Senthil wins title

T.K. Senthilkumaran of Temple City Chess Academy and S.K.P. Rajkumar of Guhan Chess Academy tied for honours with 5 points each out of possible 6 in the Madurai District rapid chess championship in Madurai on Thursday. But Senthilkumar won the title on better progressive score. Senthilkumaran and Rajkumar will represent Madurai in the State rapid championship in Thiruvallur from January 2 to 5.

Final placings: 1. T.K. Senthilkumaran 5 pts; 2. S.K.P. Rajkumar 5; 3. S.S. Manikandan (Dolphin MHSS) 4.5; 4. Dhanasekaran (Swathi Chess Academy) 4; 5. M. Murugan (Mahatma School) 4.

Venkat in sole lead

Former State under-17 champion Venkatasundaram beat overnight leader Shyam Nikhil in the seventh round and emerged sole leader with 6 points in the open category of the Pearlcity Trophy State-level chess tournament in Tuticorin on Thursday.

Latha Mathavan Polytechnic and Golden Star Football Club were involved in a 1-1 draw in the Madurai DFA `C' division league here on Thursday.

Balaji scored for Golden Star in the 33rd minute and Veerakumar equalised in the 48th minute.

SDATN posts win

Sports Development Authority of Tamil Nadu and Margoschis HSS, Nazareth registered their second successive wins in their respective group leagues and qualified for the semifinals of the state-level inter-school football tournament at VOC ground Palayamkottai on Thursday.

The results (Group A): SDAT bt St. Xaviers HSS 5-0; St. Mary's, Vikramasingapuram drew with St. Xaviers HSS 2-2. Group B: Margoschis HSS bt St. John's HSS Palayamkottai 1-0; St. John's HSS bt West Tirunelveli HSS Nallur 4-0.

Yuvaraj nets five

At Tirunelveli, five goals by Yuvaraj, three by Nataraj Murugan and one by Kumaran helped Nethaji Sports Club, Chennai, thrash Young Men FA Pudukottai 9-0 and enter the quarterfinals of the Universal Trophy football on Thursday.

In another match, Tuticorin Port Trust edged past Dhinamani FC Chennai 3-0 via tiebreaker. Praveen, Dineshkumar and Donglas scored for Port Trust.

Amigos posts win

Amigos Cricket Club, Madurai, defeated Theni XI by 30 runs in the Sun Brothers Trophy State-level cricket tournament in Usilampatti on Thursday.

The scores: Amigos CC 177 for seven in 30 overs (Santhosh Gopi 52, Samathuvan 52) bt Theni XI 147 in 26.5 overs (Arun 46).

Kapil Devils, Madurai 157 in 29.3 overs (Gopi 41, babu four for 25) lost to Southern Railway Institute, Tiruchi 158 for nine in 25.1 overs (Gopi four for 27).

Karnataka keeps title

Karnataka defeated Kerala 5-1 and retained the men's title in the sixth South Zone senior baseball championship, which concluded at Thevara, on Thursday.

TNOA scraps boxing

ad hoc panel

The Tamil Nadu Olympic Association (TNOA) has dissolved the ad hoc committee formed by it to run the boxing activities in the State and has recognised the Tamil Nadu State Amateur Boxing Association, led by Anil Chopra, President, M. Pichai Mani, Secretary, and A.K. Karunakaran, Administrative Secretary, according to a press release issued by the TNOA.

As the Indian Amateur Boxing Federation has recognised the body, the TNOA has also decided to extend all help to Mr. Chopra's association.
