Coimbatore: Bharat Petroleum Corporation Limited (BPCL) has set up a task force consisting of a team of top officials from BPCL and Kochi Refineries to set up infrastructure such as laying pipes and constructing a liquefied natural gas (LNG) regasification plant at Puthuvypeen near Kochi, according to M.J. Mohan, (Task Force) General Manager. Addressing a press conference here on Wednesday night, he said for the LNG regasification plant, land had already been acquired from the Cochin Port Trust. Construction activities are likely to commence in June 2006. He said that before construction work was completed, within three years, work for other infrastructure facilities like laying pipes all over Kerala, western part of Tamil Nadu and Karnataka would be taken up to market natural gas. Mr. Mohan said the global crude oil reserves were fast depleting owing to excessive use. Natural gas, of which there are plenty of reserves worldwide, is a cheaper alternative as a fuel. UNI
