Nominated Syndicates may not get extension

Universities to be asked to speed up election process

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: The State Government may not grant another extension to the terms of office of the nominated Syndicates of the Kerala and Calicut Universities.

The Education Department is reportedly against the idea of giving a second extension to the syndicates for fear of generating a controversy. The Government is also said to be keen to avoid the impression that it is "protecting" the Syndicates till its own term is over. The plan now is to give the powers of the Syndicate to the vice-chancellors in the interval, if any, between the expiry of the terms of office of the nominated Syndicates and the assumption of charge by the elected Syndicates.

The nominated Syndicates assumed charge about a year ago. The governments had amended the relevant rules of the two universities to effect the nominations. Originally the Syndicates were to have a term of office of only six months. Elections to the senates of these universities and to the Syndicates were to have been completed during this period. However, as this did not happen, the terms of office of the two syndicates were extended by another six months, to end by the middle of January, 2006.

According to sources, the universities will be asked to speed up the conduct of elections so that the elected Syndicates can assume office as soon as possible - in any case not later than March 2006.
