ALAPPUZHA: The second phase of the cleaning of canals in Alappuzha began here on Thursday with Tourism Minister K.C. Venugopal inaugurating the cleaning of the Alappuzha-Cherthala canal. The second phase aims to clear the small canals in the town of weeds and other wastes and to deepen them. The cleaning of the Commercial canal and Vadai canal, which are the main canals of the town, is on. Work on them began a year ago. Mr. Venugopal said the cleaning of the Murinjapuzha canal and the Alappuzha-Ambalappuzha canal would also be carried out in the second phase. The Minister said the cleaning of the stretch of the Alappuzha-Cherthala canal in the Alappuzha Assembly constituency would be completed in 20 days. The estimated cost of the cleaning of the canal is Rs.48 lakhs, he said. The Minister promised that all the small canals in the town would be cleaned as part of the project.
