Central unions threaten strike

Special Correspondent

They are demanding the constitution of the sixth pay commission

GULBARGA: All central trade unions, including INTUC, have joined hands on the demand for the constitution of the sixth Central pay commission.

They have threatened that Union Government employees in all sectors, including Defence and Railways, will go on an indefinite strike in February if the demand was not conceded.

Disclosing this to presspersons here on Thursday, Vice-President of the All-India Railwaymen Federation (AIRF) P.R. Menon, who is also General Secretary of the National Railway Mazdoor Union (NRMU), one of the two recognised unions in the Railways, said a decision had been taken on a secret ballot.

He said that representatives all Union Government employees' unions and federations would meet in New Delhi on January 14 and 15 to discuss the outcome of the secret ballot and announce the date of strike on January 15.

Mr. Menon indicated that the Union Government employees would time their indefinite strike in February during the budget session to draw the attention of the country.

Mr. Menon said the central unions had exhausted all avenues at forcing the Government to concede their demands, and had decided to launch the strike as a last resort.

He pointed out that the high-powered Joint Consultative Machinery (JCM), an apex body constituted by the Government to negotiate the demands raised by the employees, had become ineffective.

The central unions had also submitted memorandums to Prime Minister Manmohan Singh and Union Finance Minister P. Chidambaram pleading for the early constitution of the pay commission, but the Government had not responded.
