CHENNAI: Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam councillor K. Dhanasekaran, who was arrested on December 20 in connection with the M.G.R. Nagar stampede, has been detained under the Goondas Act. The order issued by Greater Chennai Commissioner of Police R.Nataraj on Thursday said the councillor had been detained under the Act "with a view to preventing him from acting in any manner prejudicial to the maintenance of public order."
Operation suspended
I Additional Sessions Judge A.R. Selvakumar had granted Mr. Dhanasekaran conditional bail last week. The operation of the order was suspended till January 2 by the High Court. He is lodged in Chennai Central Prison.
Statewide protest
The detention comes on the eve of a Statewide protest called by the Opposition Democratic Progressive Alliance on Friday, demanding constitution of all-party panels to oversee flood relief programmes. DMK president M.Karunanidhi condemned Mr. Dhanasekaran's detention and said it had come at a time when the Opposition parties were protesting the "foisting of cases" against him. DMK sources said the detention would be challenged in court. It was "clearly intended to ensure that he is not released anytime soon," they alleged.
