SALEM: Students should try to identify their unique talents and make efforts to sharpen them besides concentrating on the curriculum, Collector A. Sukumaran has said.

Addressing the students at the Art and Literature Festival 2005 organised by the Salem District Art and Literature Festival Association here on Thursday, he told them to realise their capabilities, which would help them face challenges in life. "But you (students) should also remember a fact that one cannot be a jack of all trades. Everyone has a skill and should focus on mastering it," he said.

First place

He said students from the Salem district clinched the first place in the State-level art and literature competitions held under the Young Talent Scheme in Tiruchi this year.

Later, Mr. Sukumaran distributed prizes to the winners of various competitions held as part of the festival. Students from Salem Educational District had won 468 prizes, Sankagiri Educational District - 420 and Salem Revenue District - 473 prizes.

In the Government and Government-Aided schools' category, St. Mary's Girls Higher Secondary School, Mettur, bagged the championship and in the Matriculation schools' category, Malco Vidhyalaya Matriculation HSS, Mettur, won the trophy. Students performed cultural programmes, including dance, music and drama in the festival. Chief Educational Officer S. Sethuramavarma welcomed. District Education Officer T. Periyasamy and District Elementary Education Officer Vasantha were present.
