DGP reviews arrangements for Kalachakra

Staff Reporter

Twelve-day event begins on January 5

AMARAVATHI (GUNTUR DIST.): The Government is working hard to ensure that Kalachakra ceremony to be conducted here from January 5 will be the best ever, said Andhra Pradesh Director-General of Police Swaranjit Sen.

The DGP was here on Thursday to review the security arrangements being made by the police department for the 12-day event. He caught up with a few Tibetan monks and visitors at the main preaching site and enquired about their problems.

Officials thanked

The monks said that they were touched by the hospitality extended by the people and thanked the officials for their hard work. They said that all other religious preparations were going on well as per the schedule. The Kalachakra temple and stage, from where Dalai Lama would initiate the empowerment ceremony, was being done by a dedicated team of workers from Norbulingka Institute.

"The tent is the largest and most impressive Tibetan tent to be constructed till now. The master craftsmen from Norbulingka Institute began this project in February 2005. The tent was designed by Master Thangka painter, Tenpa Choephel," explained a monk.

The tent would be raised over a three-tier stage, measuring 67ft x 55ft. The thirteen roof panels will be decorated with traditional Tibetan appliqué in eleven colours. The traditional Buddhist deer and dharma wheel on the lower canopy of the tent would be of painted wood, the monks said.

Police deployment

Earlier, the DGP held a meeting with senior police officials. He said that he was impressed by the activities done by the district police. Around 4,500 policemen would be deployed for bandobust duty during the ceremony.

"They will ensure that the ceremony goes on peacefully without any problems," Mr. Sen said.
