Official arrested on corruption charge

DAVANGERE: Lokayukta sleuths, led by Superintendent of Police N.K. Naika, arrested a field officer of the Scheduled Caste and Scheduled Tribe Development Corporation when he was allegedly accepting a bribe of Rs. 500 from a person to give a favourable report on an application for a loan.

The name of the official was given as Manjunath, a field officer. He was arrested and released on bail, it is learnt.

Fake ballot papers found, inquiry ordered

BIJAPUR: An inquiry has been ordered into alleged bogus voting with the help of fake ballot papers in the Kolhar zilla panchayat segment in Basavanabagewadi taluk. The Bharatiya Janata Party had made allegations about poll rigging in some zilla and taluk panchayat segments in the taluk. Gurusangappa Gurulingappa Giddappagol, who lost from the segment,

and some party office-bearers met Deputy Commissioner Mohammad Mohsin and handed over a memorandum along with some fake ballot papers found in the segment on Wednesday. Mr. Mohsin told The Hindu that he has asked the taluk election officer to look into the allegations and file a report.

Award for book by journalist

GULBARGA: Vignaneshwara Mitakshara, a book written by senior journalist Srinivas Sirnoorkar, has bagged the Sri M.G. Ranganathan Memorial Book Award, instituted by the Veenavee Prakashana, Bangalore. It is learnt that Mr. Sirnoorkar's book has bagged the second prize to win the award. K.N. Puttraya's Manmanthana Suhuba Chinthana has bagged the first prize and K.M. Rajasekhar's Patrakartha-Patrikodyama the third prize. Mr. Sirnoorkar's work, published by Gulbarga University, deals with the life and times of the jurist of yore, Vignaneshwara. The book throws light on the immortal work, "Mitakshara", of Vignaneshwara, which was a commentary on the Yagnya Valkya Smruthi. — Special Correspondent

Questionnaire on pay scales

BANGALORE: The State's Fifth Pay Commission, headed by former Additional Chief Secretary C. Gopal Reddy, to revise pay scales and other benefits of State Government employees, has drawn up a general questionnaire to elicit opinions from eminent personalities, public institutions and associations of the employees. A copy of the questionnaire is available with the Deputy Secretary, Fifth State Pay Commission, 4th Floor, 5th Stage, Multi-storeyed Building, Dr. B.R. Ambedkar Veedhi, Bangalore - 560 001. Programme for retired officials

BHADRAVATI: The Small Industries Service Institute of the Union Government, Bangalore, will organise a 40-day skill-oriented free training programme on computers and mobile phone repair and servicing; electrical appliances repair and servicing; Tally 7.2, TV and radio repair for those who have taken voluntary retirement from Central public sector enterprises such as VISL, HMT, ITI, IOL, NTC, NTPC and BEML and are below 58 years of age. A preliminary sensitisation programme to select candidates will be held from January 2 to 7 at Hotel Pavana Residency, B.H. Road here. Training in Moti work

MYSORE: The Indira Gandhi Rashtriya Manav Sangrahalaya will organise a training programme in Moti work of Gujarat at its Wellington House premises on Irwin Road here. According to a statement from the sangrahalaya officer in-charge, J. Vijay Mohan, artist Naseema Ben and her assistant will provide training under the "Do and learn" series. The raw material cost will have to be met by the participants and individually prepared items will be issued to them after the programme. Certificates will be issued to participants on the last day of the programme. Lokayukta raid

BELLARY: Officials of Bellary Lokayukta raided the house of Gopal Reddy, Agricultural Officer, CADA, on Wednesday and found assets disproportionate to his known sources of income.

According to a press release from the Superintendent of Police, Lokayukta seized assets which included over a kg of gold, over five kg of silver, Rs. 1.81 lakhs, NSCs and documents for two complexes, four sites and vehicles. A case has been registered and investigation is on, the press release said. — Staff Correspondent

Musical tribute

BELLARY: A music concert will be organised to mark the death anniversary of "Gaanayogi" Panchakshari Gawai, a visually challenged music maestro of yesteryears, at the Raghava Kalamandir here on Friday at 6 p.m. Nadoja Subhadramma Mansur, renowned professional stage artiste and vocalist, will inaugurate the programme. Information Officer G. Chandrakant will be the chief guest. Artistes Vandali Virupakshappa from Manvi in Raichur Taluk; Jalibenchi Doddabasavarya Gawai, recipient of Karnataka Rajyotsava Award, Pampapatiswamy Wodeyar, Nagabhushan Bapur, Doddabasava Gavai, Jayateertha Jahagirdar, Subhadramma Mansur, Jayashri Bhat (all vocalists) will perform. — Staff Correspondent

Lecture series

BELLARY: Dr. Mankari Srinivasacharya, Kannada lecturer in First Grade Junior College here, said that "dasa sahitya" had laid stress on human resource development besides preaching social reforms.

He was speaking on "Keertan Sahitya", at a special lecture series organised by the Department of Information in association with Department of Kannada and Culture at Municipal Junior College here on Wednesday.

He said that "dasas", particularly Purandara Das and Kanaka Das, had composed "keertans" giving importance to the welfare of mankind. Their composition is still relevant, he said. — Staff Correspondent

Two arrested

DAVANGERE: The police have arrested two persons on charges of kidnapping a minor girl and detaining her for more than three days in Chitradurga and Bangalore. The arrested were Naveen and Ravikiran. The police handed over the girl to her parents. — Staff Correspondent

Repolling peaceful

Raichur: The repolling for the Neermanvi taluk panchayat in Manvi taluk held on Thursday was peaceful with a voter turnout of 55.27 per cent. Of the 5,352 voters in the constituency, 2,962 cast their votes. The repolling was necessitated as polling officers failed to include a bundle of about 500 ballot papers during counting of votes on Tuesday. Counting will be held at the Tahsil office in Manvi on Friday. — Staff Correspondent
