BHOPAL: More than 50,000 of the 51, 806 villages in Madhya Pradesh inhabited according to the 1991 Census have been electrified. Under the rural electrification drive, new power supply lines have been laid to ensure power supply access to 213 villages within the last two-year period. According to the latest projections by the State Government, 97.43 per cent of the villages and more than 13.31 lakh irrigation pumps have been electrified across the State. According to an official spokesman, special efforts are being made under the Pradhan Mantri Gramodaya Yojna to extend electricity supply lines to more villages. During 2004-05, an amount of Rs. 3.39 crores had been sanctioned for electrification of 22634 below poverty line (BPL) rural households and the State Government reported electrification of 14958 BPL rural households during the last financial year. Under the Rural electrification campaign, Rs. 1906.42 crores were disbursed as loan assistance to the State till March, 2005. With this, the cumulative sanction of loan assistance to the State till March 31, 2005 was Rs. 3476.73 crores.
