Karnataka retains title

KOCHI: Karnataka defeated Kerala 5-1 and retained the men's title in the sixth South Zone senior baseball championship, which concluded at the Sacred College ground, Thevara, on Thursday.

Karnataka's Sidharth was adjudged as the championship's best player and Vijay the best pitcher. Kerala's Ajith Kumar was selected as the best catcher.

On Wednesday, Kerala defeated Tamil Nadu 4-1 and won its maiden women's title.

Jineesh cracks ton

P. Jineesh scored a century (101 off 79 balls, 20x4) as Century CC thrashed MYCA (Mattancherry) by 132 runs in the fifth N.S. Krishnan Trophy EDCA under-17 cricket league at the KRL Oval, Ambalamugal, on Thursday.

The scores (at Tripunithura): Tripunithura CC 204 for five in 30 overs (Nandu Prakash 56, Manu Krishnan 57) bt Classic Academy 134 for nine in 30 overs (B. Ronson 40, Mathew Basil three for 44); Chittoor CC 124 for seven in 26 overs (Arun Ramesh four for 33) lost to Ernakulam CC 125 for two in 21.5 overs (P.A. Arun 47 n.o.).

At Ambalamugal: Century 237 for six in 30 overs (P. Jineesh 101, Deepu 77, Sagar four for 59) bt MYCA 105 in 28.4 overs (Ajay Unni four for 12, P.Jineesh three for 8).

Pachalam CC 134 for eight in 30 overs (Jismon James 52, H. Ratheesh four for 25) lost to Young Challengers CC 134 in 26.5 overs (Ojo George three for 16).

Udaya in semifinals

Ernakulam's Udaya Sporting Club defeated Shine Soldiers, Vazhakkala, 2-1 and entered the semifinals of the Star Homes Cup C.H. Mohammed Koya football tournament at the Santa Cruz Ground, Fort Kochi, on Thursday.

All the goals came early in the first half. Arun (6th minute) and Mohanan (15th) scored for Udaya while Abyal (10th) netted the Soldiers' consolation goal.

Young Challengers in final

At Thiruvananthapuram, Young Challengers, North Paravur entered the finals of the 9th K.K. Sreenivasan memorial all-Kerala cricket tournament. In the semifinal, Young Challengers defeated Haripad Youngboys Cricket Club by three-wickets.

Schools football

The fifth Mar Athanasious Trophy South India inter-school invitation football tournament begins at the Municipal Stadium, Aluva, on Jan. 8.

Fifteen teams, from Kerala, Karnataka, Andhra Pradesh and Goa, will figure in the event.

Defending champion AP Sports School (Secunderabad), runner-up G.V. Raja (Thiruvananthapuram), St. Xavier's (Goa) and Govt Sports School (Bangalore) are some of the teams, which will be seen in action. Swimming Olympian Sebastian Xavier will inaugurate the main tournament and Sebastian Paul, MP, will be the chief guest for the final.

A mini MAT event, for local teams, will be held here from January 2 to 6 with the winner qualifying to the main tournament. A match for veterans, between Fort Kochi XI and Aluva XI, will be conducted along with the tournament, on Jan. 22.

Easy for Karamana RC

At Thiruvananthapuram, Karamana Recreation Club `A' defeated Youngmen Cricket Club by 37 runs in the Canara Bank-TDCA `B' division cricket league at the Agriculture College ground here on Thursday.

The scores: KRC `A' 143 in 30.5 overs (Rakesh 66, Visakh five for 23, Sajin three for 34) bt YMCC 106 (Febin 41, Rajgopal five for 43, Ramkumar three for 34).

Sub-junior wrestling

The 27th State sub-junior (under-17) wrestling championships will be held at the Parade Ground, Fort Kochi on January 13 and 14. Nearly 300 wrestlers will take part in the two-day meet. The Kerala team for the Nationals will be chosen from this championship.

Chitra State Tennis

The Sree Chitra State tennis championship was inaugurated by Additional Chief Secretary John Mathai IAS at the TTC courts, Thiruvananthapuram on Thursday. Nearly 250 players are taking part in the tournament and the matches will be played on Friday. — Principal Correspondent
