KOLKATA : The final round saw drawn encounters on the top three boards helping local boy Bitan Banerjee win The Telegraph schools' chess championship on progressive score at the Alekhine Chess Club on Thursday. Banerjee, with a score of nine points out of a possible 11, shared the top spot with state-mate Debatiya Sinha Biswas and Kaushalendra Kumar of Bihar at the end of the 11th round. With the progressive scores applied, Banerjee took the title and a cash prize of Rs. 15,000, Sinha Biswas came second while Kumar had to be content with the bronze. On the second board, Sinha Biswas desperately tried to win against Soumya Thakurta but the latter defended well and forced a draw in 43 moves. Avi Bagdi of Madhya Pradesh, who drew with Suman Basu, placed fourth with 8.5 points. Local Saint James School, represented by Thakurta (8.5), Abhratanu Dutta (8.5), Nilabhro Datta (7.5), and Saurav Chakraborti (7), was declared the best school totalling 31.5 points. Top 10 positions: 1. Bitan Banerjee (Ben) 9.0 (Progressive score: 58); 2. Debaditya Sinha Biswas (Ben) 9.0 (56.5); 3. Kausahendra Kumar (Bih) 9.0 (55.5); 4. Avi Bagdi (MP) 8.5 (56); 5. Soumya Thakurta (Ben) 8.5 (55.5); 6. Suman Basu (Ben) 8.5 (53.5); 7. Abhratanu Dutta (Ben) 8.5 (53.5); 8. Utkal Ranjan Sahoo (Ori) 8.5 (52.5); 9. Debanjan Das 8.5 (51);10. Ankan Modak 8.5 (48.5).
