MOMENT OF PRIDE: Chandrakanta
NEW DELHI: The Hindi novel ``Katha Satisar'' by Chandrakanta has been selected for the prestigious Vyas Samman for 2005. Now in its 15th year, the award is given to an outstanding Hindi literary work authored by an Indian that has been published in the last 10 years, an official press release said here on Thursday. The award, given annually by the K. K. Birla Foundation, carries an amount of Rs 2.5 lakh. Occupying a significant place in contemporary Indian fiction, ``Katha Satisar'' (2001) presents the Kashmir Valley with its rich mythological and historical background, and is written against the backdrop of the terror, violence and atrocities that have plagued the region. The 67-year-old author, born in Kashmir, began her creative-writing career in 1966 with a short story, and has since published seven novels, 13 collections of short stories, and one anthology of poems. Her best-known works are Apne Apne Konark (1995), Poshnool ki Vapasi (1988) and Ailan Gali Zinda Hae (1984). -- PTI
