NEW DELHI: In an effort to bridge lack of information in the area of paediatric malignancies, a three-day meeting organised by the Department of Paediatric Surgery at the All-India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS) opened here on Thursday. Experts from 14 countries including the United States, United Kingdom, Netherlands, Japan, Germany and Italy are participating in the meeting that is also part of the AIIMS golden jubilee celebrations. "India alone has about 70,000 children born each year who suffer from various types of cancer and there is very limited facility that exclusively treats children. Through talks and discussion at the meeting, we will be coming up with a guideline for uniformity of treatment for children with cancer and also introduce a registry for preparing a data bank. The lack of treatment has ensured that India continues to contribute significantly to the morbidity and mortality of children below 14 years of age,'' said professor and head of department and organising chairman of the programme, Devendra K. Gupta.
