Naxal violence on the decline: Karimnagar SP

Staff Reporter

Community policing pays rich dividends: D.S. Chauhan

  • Mahila Rakshana Committees will be constituted in all the villages during the year 2006
  • Policemen to be involved in the developmental works of the district
  • Special cell constituted to deal with the issue of `fake' Gulf travel agents

KARIMNAGAR: "We want to free Karimnagar district from naxalite violence with the active participation of people by taking up community policing on a massive scale during the year 2006," said Superintendent of Police Devendra Singh Chauhan here on Wednesday.

    Counselling melas

Briefing newsmen about the annual crime details in the district, the SP said that naxalite violence has come down drastically over the years following the community policies initiated by the district police. He also said that there was no recruitment of under ground cadres into the naxalite fold due to counselling melas organised for the militants and the rural youth.

"With the `Operation Rakshana', we are successful in controlling naxalite violence," he maintained.

During this year, out of 12 incidents of exchange of fire, a total of 20 naxalites including 10 Maoist, six Janashakthi and the remaining Sikasa group naxals were killed. Among the top cadres who were killed in encounters include, the Janashakti State committee member Riaz, the Maoist east division committee member, Dharmula Mallikarjun, Sircilla action team members and others.

There was a record number of 104 surrenders compared to the last few years.

On community policing, he said that the Mahila Rakshana Committees (MRC) will be constituted in all the villages during the year 2006 to check the social issues such as dowry harassment, dowry deaths, ID liquor, gambling, eve-teasing, fake Gulf agents racket etc.

He also said that the police would actively participate in the developmental works of the district by involving itself in the remote and interior areas development (RIAD) programme.

    Travel agents

On the fake Gulf travel agents racket, he said that several innocent rural youth are lodged in jails in the Gulf States, while some others were acquiring the dreaded AIDS during their transit halt in Mumbai before leaving for Gulf States. He said that a special cell was constituted to exclusively deal with the fake Gulf travel agents racket.

He said that the gullible rural masses, who have gone to the Gulf countries on visit visas, were being sent back after impounding their passports.

To a query, he said that the investigation into the tiffin box bomb explosion that took place in Karimnagar RTC bus station complex some five months ago is still continuing in coordination with the Warangal police.

The OSD Hari Krishna, the Additional SP (admn), Muthyala Rao were also present.
