CHENNAI: The Centre has relaxed customs rules over the years and made them user-friendly, Chief Commissioner of Customs (Preventive) J. Sridharan said here on Thursday. Participating in the diamond jubilee valedictory function of the Tamil Chamber of Commerce here, Mr. Sridharan, in charge of Tiruchi and Tuticorin range, said it was possible for the department to improve its tax collections due to the simplification of rules. In the current financial year, the duty target of Rs. 1,000 crores for his jurisdiction would be surpassed by at least by 10 to 15 per cent. The former Supreme Court Judge, S. Natarajan, who presided, regretted that despite progress in information, space, missile and nuclear technologies, unemployment continued to be high. The number of people below the poverty line was also on the rise. It was unfortunate that present day governments were not for the people but for political parties, he said. There was mutual distrust between the government and the people and a lack of confidence that needed to be removed. This, he said, was possible if people took a pledge that they would cooperate with the government and would not indulge in unfair practices. The chamber honoured past presidents and secretaries and film producer A.V.M. Saravanan. Industrialist Nalli Kuppuswami Chetti, patron of the chamber, released the diamond jubilee souvenir. Chamber president S. Santhanam said the chamber started by the late Finance Minister, R.K. Shanmugham Chettiar, organised seminars and workshops frequently to educate the members on government rules and regulations.
