CHENNAI: Police arrested a village administrative officer on Wednesday here on charges of forgery and misuse of authority in granting pattas. According to a senior police officer, the VAO, Hameed Nissar, of Tondiarpet taluk in Chennai, forged documents to help Subramani to acquire one ground of land on Thanthoni Amman Koil Street in Villivakkam, owned by Subramani's uncle Anbalagan. Mr. Nissar was then with the Perambur-Purasawalkam taluk, said the official. The illegal granting of patta came to the notice of Perambur tahsildar Bhuvaneswaran and the matter was investigated. The accused, who had already been placed under suspension in the Kolathur lake area grabbing case, was arrested by the Central Crime Branch and remanded to judicial custody.
Held for cheating
The city central crime branch arrested Mani Sharma on Wednesday on charges of cheating two persons and decamping with more than 200 sovereigns of gold. The accused has been remanded to police custody. According to the police, he duped businessman Soundarajan and doctor Nisha from Mannadi by posing as an astrologer. He allegedly promised to help them get over their bad luck by `purifying' their gold jewellery. The police recovered gold weighing 95 sovereigns from the accused's house in Tiruvallur a few months ago. The accused was arrested last month by the Bangalore police. He was lodged at the Hosur jail from where he was brought back to Chennai.
