CHENNAI: Star hotels and clubs in the city would be under the police scanner on the New Year eve and the New Year Day, said the Greater Chennai Police Commissioner R. Nataraj on Thursday.
Traffic regulation
Nearly 2,000 police personnel would be deployed from 8 p.m. on December 31 to 8 p.m. the next day to regulate traffic and ensure there are no untoward incidents, especially near 48 hotels and clubs that have been given permission to organise celebrations, Mr. Nataraj told media persons. Asked whether there was a time limit for hotels and clubs to remain open, Mr. Nataraj said his force would be on the vigil as New Year celebrations would normally go on till 2 a.m. The police would also regulate the movement of devotees in and around 59 religious centres that include Kapaleeswarar Temple and Santhome Church on January 1. Overspeeding, drunken driving and other traffic rule violations would be checked by the traffic police, especially in Marina, Besant Nagar, Tiruvanmiyur, Beach Road and Anna Salai. To prevent overspeeding, nearly 500 barricades would be put up on all major roads, including East Coast Road, Old Mahabalipuram Road and GST Road, he said. Also, traffic signals would work till 2 a.m. Check posts, police booths, traffic wardens and citizens for safe roads would be part of the arrangements made by the police, the Commissioner said.
