Coimbatore: In an effort to maintain law and order and prevent revelry on roads on the New Year eve, the City Police have planned elaborate security arrangements from Saturday evening under the supervision of Commissioner of Police Karan Singha and Deputy Commissioners of Police, T.S. Anbu (Law and Order) and Vidya D Kulkarni (Crime). The objective was to ensure that the New Year day went off peacefully in Coimbatore, Mr. Karan Singha said. Security would be stepped up in front of churches and temples. Mobile patrols and armed pickets at vital installations would form part of the arrangements especially in the wake of terrorist attacks at the Indian Institute of Sciences at Bangalore. Armed quick response teams would be positioned at strategic locations. Drunken driving would be strictly prohibited. The entire manpower available with the City Police numbering around 2,000, two companies of Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF), two companies of Tamil Nadu Special Police Battalion (TSP) and Armed Reserve (AR) manpower would be deployed on the roads. The traffic wing would conduct vehicle checks. The vigil against revelry on roads would be stepped up between 10 p.m. and 2 p.m. on Saturday night, Mr. Singha said. Surprise checks would be conducted to prohibit unauthorised New Year bash at hotels, clubs and public places. There would be a crackdown on serving liquor without permit, indecent dance performances and gambling, Mr. Anbu said.
