TIRUCHI : The Communist Party of India has urged the State Government to sanction adequate compensation to farmers, whose agricultural lands have got silted up during the torrential rain and flash floods in the district in October and November. A resolution adopted at the party's district executive meeting held here on Wednesday said that apart from damaging the standing crops, the recent natural calamity had ruined the farm lands and agricultural pumpsets by depositing a huge volume of silt. The Government should also draw up an exclusive plan for desilting tanks and other irrigational sources in the district. The meeting urged the Government to sanction immediate cash relief to the farmers on the lines of the one being done through the fair price shops. Pointing out that agriculturists were finding it difficult to revive farming activity owing to heavy debts the meeting said that for averting the fall in food productivity during the current season, the Government should sanction fresh farm loans and distributed free fertilisers and other inputs to the affected farmers. Another resolution urged the Centre to allocate more funds to the State Government to tide over the crisis caused by the flood situation. A resolution to honour 100 senior cadres, as part of the party's 80th anniversary, was also adopted. The district secretary of the party, M. Selvaraj, was among those who spoke.
