TIRUCHI : Multi-media campaign on the achievements of the United Progressive Alliance Government has benefited the weaker sections and the needy, including the student community, the Chairman of the Parliamentary Standing Committee on Departments of Personnel, Public Grievances, Law and Justice, E. M. Sudarsana Nachiyappan, said here on Wednesday. Addressing presspersons he said that only after the conduct of such campaign in six Lok Sabha constituencies in Tamil Nadu, the people came to know of the Centrally sponsored schemes. The exhibition formed the focus of the campaign and the exhibits on various health care, information technology and people-oriented and society-driven schemes were being displayed. This, he said, had resulted in creating awareness among the masses about their right and eligibility to benefit under the programmes. As all officials from the 17 departments and lead bank of the Lok Sabha constituencies concerned were present, they received petitions or processed loan applications during the campaign. So far, loans to the tune of Rs.100 crores had been sanctioned to agricultural sector, self-employment etc. Students from economically backward families and pursuing higher education were the largest beneficiaries, he said. Though the conduct of campaign was restricted only to the State capitals, the UPA Government decided to organise it in all Lok Sabha constituencies, on a trial basis, in Tamil Nadu. The campaign had so far been conducted in Madurai, Pudukotai, Dharmapuri, Krishnagiri, Arcot and North Chennai. He would submit a report to Prime Minister Manmohan Singh on the impact of the campaign on the socio-economic development in the respective region, he added. The four-day campaign is scheduled to be held in three Lok Sabha segments in January 2006. It would be inaugurated at Karur, Tiruvarur and Tiruchi on January 9, 17 and 27 respectively. Earlier, he held a discussion with the officials of 17 departments and agencies from these districts on the arrangements for the campaign. MPs L. Ganesan, A. K. S. Vijayan and K. C. Palanisamy were present.
