SP directed to inquire into charge of police atrocity

Staff Reporter

In the wake of a complaint by a person who was rendered disabled

KOCHI: The Kerala Legislative Committee on the Welfare of Women, Children and Physically Handicapped persons has directed that the Superintendent of Police, Kottayam, should inquire into the complaint of C.K. Shaji, from Vaikom that he had been injured owing to police brutality.

The panel, during a sitting held at Ernakulam District Panchayat Hall, Kakkanad, on Thursday, was considering the complaint filed by Mr. Shaji demanding assistance for living as he was rendered disabled as a result of police atrocities.

He was arrested in connection with a case registered at T.V. Puram, near Vaikom, in 1996.

Savithri Lakshmanan MLA, chairperson of the committee, said it could be doubted that Mr. Shaji was indeed disabled by the police atrocities, based on the certificate given by a doctor who had examined him. The police informed the committee that a case was pending against Mr. Shaji for having procured a fake order from the National Human Rights Commission.

However, it was reported that the police had withdrawn all cases related to the original incident based on which Mr. Shaji was arrested, in 1998.

In case it could be proved that the injuries were really the result of the police atrocities, action should be taken against the policemen responsible for it, Prof. Lakshmanan said.

The panel also ordered a re-inquiry into the complaint given by the Priji, wife of Sajeev, a police officer, hailing from Kottayam, had approached the committee with complaints against her husband, raising charges including harassment for dowry. The sitting was attended by Ludy Luis, Kalathil Abdullah and T.U. Radhakrishnan, MLAs.
