Boy killed in accident

NEW DELHI: A six-year-old boy was killed at Shahbad Dairy in North-West Delhi on Thursday evening after he came under the wheels of a mini-truck. Police have arrested the truck driver.

According to the police, Sanjay, son of Ramesh and resident of Block A Shahbad Dairy, was standing on the road when a Tata 407 mini-truck crushed him to death. Truck driver Amrit Lal, a resident of Siraspur in Bawana area, was caught and handed over to police.

Engineer commits suicide

NEW DELHI: A young engineer who was preparing for the Indian Engineering Services examination committed suicide by jumping from a three-storey building in South Delhi on Thursday.

According to police, 24-year-old Ashok (24), a native of Allahabad, had come to Delhi after securing an engineering degree recently. He jumped to death from the third floor of the building at Jia Sarai, behind All India Institute of Medical Sciences, where he was living in a rented accommodation.

The police later recovered a written statement from Ashok's pocket that stated that he was ending his life as he was not satisfied with his preparations for the forthcoming IES examination.

``Hair-razing'' experience

NEW DELHI: A Delhi consumer court has awarded compensation to a youth whose visit to a beauty clinic for removing excess body hair left him with severe skin rashes and bleeding after a botched-up laser treatment.

``The respondent (clinic) is definitely deficient in service and liable for adopting unfair trade practices and causing great agony and harassment to the complainant,'' Consumer Disputes Redressal Forum (North-West) President K S Khurana and members S C Jain and Prem Lata observed.

The court ordered a full refund of the treatment fee of Rs 15,000 and Rs 20,000 as compensation for the agony and harassment caused the complainant.

Gallantry ribbons burnt

NEW DELHI: Frustrated at not getting his due emoluments from the Army, a retired captain on Thursday burnt his gallantry ribbons and certificates at the India Gate here.

Retd Captain Charan Singh Sidhu claims he has not been given his full service emoluments as per the rules.

``I was Commissioned in the 5th Batallion of the Parachute Regiment on June 22, 1968. I met with an accident on the Tibet border in Himachal Pradesh, caused by a landslide, on November 21, 1970, in which one Major and the jeep driver died while I lost my arm. My leg suffered multiple fractures leaving me with 80 per cent disability,'' Sidhu said.

``I have decided to burn the medals which I received during my service period which includes those given for 1971 Indo-Pak war, high altitude warfare medal and for my services in the southern sector,'' Sidhu said.

Transco wins award

NEW DELHI: Delhi Government-owned Transco Ltd has won an award for `Power Sector Reform Initiatives' given away by an industries' association.

The second runners-up award won by the power company was handed over to Chief Minister Sheila Dikshit by Power Minister Haroon Yusuf and Special Secretary (Power) and CMD Transco Ltd Arun Goyal in her office on Thursday.
