16 commercial properties demolished

Staff Reporter

NEW DELHI: For the first time since the citywide drive against unauthorised constructions began on December 17, demolition squads of the Municipal Corporation of Delhi failed to target even a single residential property on Thursday.

The drive remained confined to just four of the total 12 civic zones where 16 commercial properties were targeted.

Under the new policy where the civic body has decided to cover only four zones for two consecutive days in a week, action was taken against illegal constructions in Karol Bagh, Sadar Paharganj, Shahdara (North) and Shahdara (South) zones that included sealing of three commercial properties in Karol Bagh zone.

Demolition

Demolition squads razed eight commercial properties -- five in Shahdara (South), two in Shahdara (North) and one in Karol Bagh zone, while five illegal structures were partially demolished.

The past couple of days have seen the civic body literally applying brakes to its ongoing demolition drive.

As a result, not even 50 properties were targeted where only four zones were covered, whereas earlier the civic body was taking action on more than 50 properties on a single day covering all the 12 civic zones.

So far the civic body has taken action against 413 properties -- 316 commercial and 97 residential -- against the target of over 18,000 unauthorised structures on which the MCD has already sent notices since 2001.
