A RARE CASE: Ayesha Sultana and her husband, Sajid Pasha, from Kolar district with their babies at the Manipal Hospital in Bangalore on Friday. Photo: K. Gopinathan
BANGALORE: Ayesha Sultana, 20, from Kolar district was delivered of quadruplets through a Caesarean section at the Manipal Hospital here on December 22. Ms. Sultana was eight-and-a-half months pregnant when she was admitted to the hospital with high blood pressure. Scans and diagnosis revealed that she was carrying quadruplets, according to a press release from the hospital. Praveena Shenoi, consultant gynaecologist, performed the Caesarean section on Ms. Ayesha and helped her deliver a girl and three boy babies. While the girl baby weighs 1.8 kg, the boys weigh 1.6 kg, 1.3 kg and 980 gm., respectively. She said most quadruplets are usually born premature and their survival rate is poor. But in this case, the delivery took place after 35 weeks of pregnancy. Therefore, the babies are more mature. Calling it a rare case, she said this happens in one in six lakh cases. Most quadruplets are born as a result of assisted reproduction. The fact that all babies have survived makes it unique, Dr. Shenoi said. Arvind Shenoi, consultant paediatrician, said the babies are doing well, but they will be kept in the neonatal intensive care unit (ICU) for some more time. As a goodwill gesture, the hospital has waived the bed charges and doctor's fee for three babies as Ms. Ayesha hails from a poor family.
