PONDICHERRY: Petroleum Sports Promotion Board (Ajmer) and Tamil Nadu won the sub-junior boys' and girls' titles respectively in the Suzlon National sub-junior and inter-State table tennis championship, hosted by Pondicherry State TTA, at the Rajiv Gandhi Indoor Stadium here on Friday. In the girls' final, Tamil Nadu, after a nervous start, got the better of Maharashtra `A' 3-1, while PSPB had the measure of North Bengal 3-1 to bag the boys' title. Panic buttons were pressed when K.K. Narmadha lost the first girls' match to Mallka Bhandarkar. In came V. Sneha attacking from the word go against Shruti Talnikar. Pegging Shruti to the backhand, Sneha went for her shots. N. Vidya took over from there. After a tough first game, Vidya did not give the stocky Roma Dutia any chance. In the fourth match, Narmadha, having taken a 2-1 lead over Shruti, closed out the match as expected. In the boys' final, only Raj Mondal stood between PSPB and victory. He has been a thorn in the flesh for all the players. With his height and body structure, he packs more punch than most others. He won his first match against Nitin V. Thiruvengadam quite convincingly, equalising the scores at 1-1. Sourav Saha gave PSPB the crucial 2-1 lead.
