Shivraj Patil arriving today

Thiruvananthapuram: Union Home Minister Shivraj V. Patil will arrive here on Saturday. Official sources said Mr. Patil, who will arrive in the Border Security Force's aircraft at 10.30 a.m., will proceed to Varkala by helicopter from the airport to participate in the 73rd annual Sivagiri pilgrimage. He will proceed by road to visit the Central Police Reserve Force Pallipuram camp at 2 p.m. - Staff Reporter

Arjun Singh in town

Thiruvananthapuram: Union Human Resource Development Minister Arjun Singh arrived here on Friday on a private visit. Mr. Singh, who arrived at 3 p.m. by the scheduled IC 167 flight of Indian Airlines, was received by Education Minister E.T. Mohammed Basheer, the Congress leader Palode Ravi and officials of the State Government at the airport. Later, he left for a five star resort at Kovalam. Official sources said the visit of Mr. Singh is purely private and that he does not have any official engagements in the city.

Birla award for children's theatre

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: Rangaprabhath, the children's theatre movement based at Alumthara, Venjaramoodu in Thiruvananthapuram district, has been selected for the prestigious G.D. Birla International Award 2005 for its role in preserving the cultural and spiritual heritage of the country. The award, which consists of a citation and a purse of Rs.2 lakhs will be presented to the theatre group by the Vice-President at a function at Uparashtrapathi Bhavan on February 3. — Special Correspondent

M. Ayyappan takes over as HLL CMD

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: M. Ayyappan, managing director of Hindustan Latex Limited (HLL), has been elevated as the chairman and managing director of the company. An engineering graduate from the College of Engineering, Thiruvananthapuram, he took his MBA degree from the Cochin University of Science and Technology. After taking over as the head of the Marketing Department of HLL in 1991, he was responsible for giving a new direction and a marketing orientation to the organisation, which was till then dependent on Government orders.

Stop for train

Thiruvananthapuram: The Railways have provided stop for train no. 6341 Ernakulam-Thiruvananthapuram Inter-city Express at Pettah railway station from January 1. According to a railway release, the departure timing of the train at Pettah railway station will be 10 a.m.

Jail for accused in P.E. Usha case

KOZHIKODE: Kozhikode Judicial First Class Magistrate V.C. Krishnan on Friday sentenced V. Rameshan to two years rigorous imprisonment on charges of harassing P.E. Usha, an employee of Calicut University now on deputation to another agency, on a private bus. He is charged with sexually harassing Ms. Usha on a private bus on December 29, 1999. The judge sentenced him to two years rigorous imprisonment on Section 354 (assault or criminal force to woman with intent to outrage her modesty) of Indian Penal Code and six months simple imprisonment on Section 509 (word, gesture or act intended to insult the modesty of a woman) of IPC. Since the two sentences will run concurrently, Rameshan will have to undergo rigorous imprisonment for two years only. Additional Public Prosecutor M. Raghavan appeared for the prosecution. - Staff Reporter

Catholicos to be honoured

PATHANAMTHITTA: The Catholicos of the Malankara Orthodox Church and the Malankara Metropolitan, Moran Mor Baselius Mar Thoma Didymos-I, will be honoured in his home village of Nedumpram-Amichakary, near Thiruvalla, on Saturday afternoon. The Catholicos, who is also the patron of the Thalavady Chiramel Kudumbayogam, will be escorted to St. Mary's Auditorium in Amichakary from the nearby ANC Junction in a procession at 3 p.m. on Saturday. Mar Thoma Metropolitan Philipose Mar Chrysostom will inaugurate the meeting at 4 p.m. Geevarghese Mar Athanaseus Episcopa will preside over the function. Cyriac Thomas, former Vice-Chancellor of Mahatma Gandhi University, will deliver the keynote address. — Staff Reporter

Plea to announce wage revision

KOLLAM: The 22nd State conference of the Kerala Groundwater Department Staff Association has called upon the Government to immediately announce wage revision for employees and teachers. The conference called for a ban on all unauthorised groundwater tapping by private agencies and wanted groundwater offices established at taluk level. The conference elected B. Sasidharan and A.G. Radhakrishnan as president and general secretary of the association. — Staff Reporter
