ANANTAPUR: In a joint effort, the Itukalapalli and Penukonda police arrested a 13-member gang allegedly involved in looting silk sarees and other material worth about Rs. 12.3 lakhs in the district on Saturday. They also recovered silk sarees and two gold ornaments besides two jeeps, six hunting sickles and a tapancha from the gang. Giving the details to newspersons Superintendent of Police Sanjay Kumar Jain siad that the gang had looted 771 silk sarees belonging to Krishnamurthy, a trader of Mudireddypalli on December 18 by waylaying a four-wheeler, in which the trader was taking the material to Chennai. All the gang members including their leader, Muthyala Reddy, were arrested. All of them were aged between 20 and 25 years. The other members of the gang arrested were Mustafa, Mahabub Basha, Bhaskar, Narasimha Raju, Mohd. Rafi, Babu Jan, Pothaiah, Muniswamy, Nagaraju, Srinivasulu, Anjan Reddy and Sanjeeva Rayudu. During interrogation the gang members have confessed to the police that they had abducted a trader and released him after getting Rs. One lakh ransom at Utukuru in Hindupur mandal and looted Rs. 30,000 from a person on way to Gorantla, earlier. They were also involved in other crimes. The SP complimented Itukalapalli Inspector, B. Srinivasulu, Penukonda Inspector, Ravikumar, and Anantapur DSP, G. Karunakar.
