MARCHING AHEAD: CPI(M) activists taking part in the padayatra in Anantapur.

ANANTAPUR: The extensive 1,500-km `padayatra' taken up by the district unit of Communist Party of India (Marxist) in the name of `Anantha Prasthanam' wishing the comprehensive development of the district completed 500 km on Friday, after 20 days of its launch.

The gigantic effort has been taken up pressing for a solution to the problems piled up in the villages for decades. Even the leaders of the ruling Congress have also been participating in the padayatra led by District Secretary of the party, G. Obulakonda Reddy, at some places.

Objectives

Explaining the objectives of `padayatra', party leaders G. Obulakonda Reddy and Y. Visveswar Reddy, observed that successive Governments had failed to bring the district onto the path of development. Problems remained anchored in spite of the agitations being taken up from time to time.

After agriculture the people were mostly dependent on handlooms and sheep rearing vocations in the district. But, they had been finding it difficult to manage their lives with meagre income from their source of living.

A few medium irrigation projects had been completed but the fruits of such efforts were not reaching the farmers due to non-allocation of water.

The padayatra team had been trying to find out village-wise problems by spending some time in the villages concerned. Different sections of people had been approaching padayatra to pour their woes and some of them had even gone to the extent of saying that nobody had visited them like this to know their problems so far, the party leaders claimed.

Remunerative price

The sheep and goat rearing communities had been complaining that there was no encouragement to their activity, the weavers had been expressing concern about lack of remunerative price to their produce and women had been finding it difficult to earn a livelihood.

The party leaders are overwhelmed with the response they have been getting to their effort so far.
