SHRAVANABELAGOLA: Vindyagiri, where the 57-ft monolithic statue of Bahubali is located, is the main attraction for pilgrims and tourists who visit the pilgrim town of Shravanabelagola for the Mahamasthakabhisheka in February.

The statue overshadows Chandragiri (or "Small Hill"), which was the last resting place of Emperor Chandragupta Maurya, and has more hoary memorials and inscriptions than Vindyagiri.

Delegates at the ongoing All-India Jain Vidvath Sammelan here were taken on a "Chandragiri Dharshan" by literary personalities Hampa Nagarajaiah, Maruthi Nanadan Tiwari, Neeraj Jain and Jeevandra Kumar Hotpade on Saturday.

"Kalbappu", one of the early names of Chandragiri, dominates the history

of Shravanabelagola between 3 B.C. 12th A.D., with Jain traditions associating the Mauryan Emperor and his teacher Badrabahu with the place. Of 106 memorials at Shravanabelagola, 92 are located on Chandragiri.

The Vidhwans visited 14 "basadis", or Jain temples, and the cave in which Muni Bhadrabahu, one of the founders of Shravanabelagola, who was responsible for the spread of Jainism in the south, attained salvation. Another prime attraction for the scholars was Chandragupta Basadi, considered the last resting spot of Chandragupta Maurya. A

ccording to Shree Charukeerthi Bhattaraka Swamiji, the Vidwans were happy to set foot on Chandragiri.
