`Portal not hacked'

Hyderabad: Andhra Pradesh Technology Services (APTS) Managing Director K. Sunita on Saturday termed reports about its portal getting hacked baseless.

There were reports that the Andhra Pradesh State Wide Area Network was hacked by ISI agents and important data including the security operations planned by the Government for the forthcoming major national and international events at Hyderabad were accessed. The hackers, it was reported, also planted a virus that resulted in congestion of the network.

Rajnath congratulated

HYDERABAD: Former Union Minister and BJP national secretary Bandaru Dattatreya on Saturday congratulated Rajnath Singh on his unanimous election as the party's national president.

In a statement, Mr. Dattatreya expressed happiness that a leader of the farmers was chosen to lead the BJP. The BJP leader also greeted people of the State on New Year. - Special Correspondent

Slogans irk YSR

HYDERABAD: Raising of pro-YSR slogans by a group of NSUI activists and Congress workers annoyed Chief Minister Y. S. Rajasekhara Reddy during the foundation stone laying ceremony of NIMS University campus at Rangapur in Nalgonda district on Saturday. Dr. Reddy gestured them to stop. However, when they persisted, he took the mike and said "Don't you want the meeting to be held. No zindabad stop it." When slogans were raised again, as he rose to speak he again said, "Please, please stop it". - Special Correspondent

Naidu bereaved

TIRUPATI: Kanumuri Yangamma, grandmother of former Chief Minister N. Chandrababu Naidu passed away at her native Naravaripalle near here on Saturday, at a ripe age of 107.

Mr. Chandrababu's mother Ammannamma, who died last year, was the eldest of Yangamma's five children. - Staff Reporter

Rally by journalists

MAHABUBNAGAR: Journalists from the print and electronic media took out a rally here on Saturday in protest against the attack on a TV9 cameraman by the excise personnel. They alleged that Narayanpet excise inspector Amir Ali and his subordinates had assaulted cameraman Krishna at Narayanpet on Friday evening when he tried to shoot Amir Ali reportedly taking bribe from toddy tappers of Ujjelli village. - Correspondent

Excise station stormed

KURNOOL: Members of Andhra Pradesh Mahila Samakhya and activists of CPI stormed the excise station here on Saturday protesting against detention of a minor girl in lock-up. The activists, numbering about 50, stormed the excise station. When the excise staff locked the entrance, the women, led by corporators Giddamma and Dastagiramma, broke the lock and entered the station. They sought action against the officials who were responsible for the arrest of the minor girl and detaining her in the lock-up. - Staff Reporter

Novel protest by CPI(M)

Nellore: In a novel protest, to highlight the indifference of the civic authorities, functionaries of the Communist Party of India (Marxist) on Saturday presented an album containing pictures of battered roads and overflowing drains in the 15th division to Mayor P. Sailaja and other officials at the corporation office. Earlier, a procession was taken out in main streets of the town. - Staff Reporter

Worker ends life

Kakinada: A lathe machine worker Devarakonda Sudhakar (20) reportedly committed suicide by consuming pesticide at his home on Friday night. He was rushed to the Government General Hospital where he succumbed in the wee hours of Saturday. Family problems over his sister's marriage were stated to be the reason for his extreme step. The Kakinada Three Town police have registered a case. - Correspondent

Delivery of New Year greetings

KADAPA: The Department of Posts has made arrangements to deliver New Year greeting post to people in all major towns in Kadapa district on New Year Day, although Sunday happens to be a holiday, Kadapa Superintendent of Post Offices Mahabub Basha on Saturday.

The special arrangement was made to enable delivery of greetings sent by their near and dear to people on New Year Day itself and once again prove the department's commitment in serving people, he said.

Five autorickshaw drivers arrested

Nellore: The police here have nabbed five autorickshaw drivers, for allegedly relieving women passengers of ornaments, by diverting the route.

Additional S.P, D.V.S.S. Murthy, said here on Saturday, that 24 sovereigns of ornaments and an autorickshaw were recovered from them.

The accused are in the age group of 25 years and have been indulging in such activities for some time, following which a special team has been constituted. - Staff Reporter

BC panel members take out rally

CHITTOOR: Members of Backward Class Struggle Committee took out a rally from Gandhi statue on Prakasam road to Collector's office and staged a dharna before it on Saturday demanding that the Government implement Mandal Commission report besides providing 50 per cent reservation in State Assemblies and Parliament for OBCs.

Plea to curb stray dog menace

CHITTOOR: Several councillors at the Municipal Council meeting criticised the municipal authorities for not taking action to prevent roaming of stray dogs, pigs and cattle in the town leading to health hazards. Chairperson Sarala Mary presided over the meeting.

The councillors complained that the sanitary conditions in the town were in a bad shape. Councillor Ganesh Reddy wanted the authorities to give a detailed account of house tax arrears collected so far.

Rare surgery performed

Nellore: Experts at the Bollineni Superspeciality Hospital, Nellore, have successfully performed the implantation of ICD (Implantable Cardioverter Defibrillator).

According to M. Yanadi Naidu, a 38-year old patient, Madhusudhana Rao, has been suffering from extraordinary heart beat rate, due to weakness of the heart muscles. To correct the abnormal activity, implantation of ICD was done successfully by C.S. Srinivasa Raju, chief cardiologist, with the co-operation of Hyagriva Rao, cardiologist and S.R.V. Murthy, Anesthesiologist. - Correspondent

Family robbed

NANDYAL: An unidentified gang robbed a family at Bontha Street in Nandyal town on Saturday.

According to reports, the gang entered the house of Suribabu around noon, gagged an elderly woman and took away jewellery, currency and other valuables all worth Rs. 1 lakh. - Staff Reporter
