Mulayam continues diatribe against Sonia over phone tapping

U.P. Chief Minister says he has ample evidence to prove his charges

Varanasi: Despite the denial by the Union Home Ministry, Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister and Samajwadi Party supremo Mulayam Singh Yadav on Saturday reiterated his allegation that Congress president Sonia Gandhi was behind the phone tapping of senior leaders of his party including Amar Singh.

Addressing a rally here, Mr Yadav claimed he had ample evidence to vindicate his claims.

He maintained that the SP leaders, whose phones were being tapped by the Central Government and Delhi Police at the behest of Ms. Gandhi, included Shivpal Singh Yadav, Ramgopal Yadav and Akhilesh Singh Yadav.

"The Centre may also start proceedings to indict me and Amar Singh under fabricated treason charges," Mr Yadav added.

The CM asserted he would disclose the evidence he had at an appropriate time.

He also claimed even the Union Home Minister Shivraj Patil, Defence Minister Pranab Mukherjee, and Delhi Police Commissioner K.K. Paul were not informed about the tapping.

In his speech, the SP chief made several references to 10 Janpath (Official residence of Ms Gandhi at New Delhi) and Ms Sonia Gandhi.

Addressing a news conference at Lucknow on Friday, Mr Yadav had alleged that a `core group' comprising Congress president's private secretary Pulak Chatterjee and Joint Commissioner (Northern Range) Crime, Delhi Police Ranjit Narain were behind the tapping.

He claimed there were possibilities that Prime Minister Manmohan Singh and the Union Home Minister were unaware of it.

However, the Home Ministry described as "baseless" Mr. Yadav's allegation that Amar Singh's telephone was being monitored by Delhi Police and kept under surveillance.
