Government interested in setting up indigenous tourism models

Mangalore has tremendous potential, says Deputy Chief Minister

CHITRAPURA (MANGALORE): Karnataka's coastal areas have a unique culture. Just any tourism model cannot be implanted here, Deputy Chief Minister M.P. Prakash has said.

He was speaking to reporters here on Saturday after inaugurating `Kadalda Parba' (beach festival) organised by Mogaveera Vyastapaka Mandali.

Goa culture

Goa has a different culture since it was under colonial rule for long. But in Karnataka, people along the coast worship the sea.

The Government is interested in developing indigenous models of tourism in Karnataka, but the comforts, pricing and facilities for tourists should be in acceptable limits and terms. Domestic tourism has various facets which has the scope to be tapped in a big way, he said.

Beach festival

Mr. Prakash appreciated the way beach festival was organised, where fishermen pooled in their resources and put their traditional cuisine, hard work, courage and other social aspects in a tourism frame. This is the model that the Government is interested in promoting.

Mangalore has tremendous tourism potential, particularly for beach, wildlife, adventure and `monsoon chasing,' where the rigours of nature have become a component of tourism, Mr. Prakash said.

There is a section of people, particularly from the hinterland and arid regions of the state, who like to indulge in `monsoon chasing.' All these tourism models should have both private and public participation, Mr. Prakash said.
