CHENNAI: Work on the construction of a police academy at Oonamanchery, near Tambaram, on the city's southern outskirts, has commenced eleven years after the Tamil Nadu Government announced the setting up of the facility. Police sources say it is proposed to construct the classrooms and the administrative offices of the academy in the begining. . It was in 1994, the Tamil Nadu Government announced that the academy would be constructed at a cost of Rs.36 crore. However, due to cost escalation over the years, the State Government later gave the nod for the revised estimate of Rs.48.23 crore. A sum of Rs.19 crore has already been sanctioned. The sources said that the academy would have proper landscaping. It is also proposed to plant thousands of tree saplings inside the premises. Plans are on to beautify a lake, which already exists in the site. The project is to be set up on 132.92 acres . As per the Tamil Nadu Government's proposal, the prestigious academy will serve as a most modern establishment for training nearly 800 cadets at a time on its completion. After the government announced the setting up of the academy, identification of a suitable site for the project was a difficult task for the authorities. Initially, a site at Veerapuram, a western suburb, was considered. However, following objections that it was a catchment area, the idea was given up.
