Six-member gang arrested on burglary charge in capital

Suspected to be involved in crimes at various places

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: The city police today arrested a six-member gang allegedly involved in a number of criminal activities, including murder, burglary and theft, in various parts of the State, including Thiruvananthapuram, Kottarakkara, Chengannur and Ernakulam.

Those arrested are Shaji alias Tiger, 25, a resident of Beemapalli; Sunil Gupta, 25, a resident of Nemom; Dileep, 27, hailing from Kamaleswaram; Sambav, 26, a resident of Thumba; Biju, 25, of Kuzhivila; and Rasheed, 23, a native of Palakkad.

The accused were arrested on the basis of a tip-off received by the Commissioner of Police, Manoj Abraham. According to the police, the gang members planned to burgle the house of a businessman at Chavakkad, when they were nabbed from their vehicle parked near the Family Court in Sreekaryam.

The police said Shaji, the leader of the gang, had around 28 criminal cases pending against him in Peroorkada police station alone. Shaji had an uncanny ability to prise open the rear door of houses using iron rods.

His partner Sunil Gupta, who was fond of leading a `luxurious lifestyle' selling the stolen goods, had served nearly two years as a juvenile delinquent. The accused is also a `talented' artist who devotes his `leisure' time for drawing and painting. The police have recovered some of the paintings done by the accused along with the stolen goods.
